Solan (created in 1 September 1972) is a city and a Municipal Corporation in Solan district in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. It is located 50 kilometres (31 mi) south of state capital Shimla. The place is named after the Hindu goddess Shoolini devi a fair is held every year in the month of June. It begins with the worship of goddess Shoolini Mata. A 3-day mela is held at the central Thodo ground on this occasion.. Solan was the capital of erstwhile princely state, Bhagat.[2] It is known as the "Mushroom city of India" because of the mushroom research centre situated at Chambaghat, and the vast mushroom farming in the area, Solan is also called as "city of Red Gold" after bulk production of tomatoes in the area.
Solan city is spread over an area of 33.43 km2 which makes it the largest city of Himachal Pradesh according to its area the second place is owned by shimla with an area of 31.60 km2, Solan also have largest per capita vehicle population in Asia. it is the second largest city of Himachal after Shimla in urban population.
